Session Four:  Mitt Romney and Red State Religion

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 - 6:30pm
Although former Governor Romney is a Mormon, his political language also echoes deeply engrained themes in the broader religious history of the United States. Romney, in spite of evangelical suspicions, has presented himself as the high priest of red state civil religion. We shall examine the religious themes that pervade Romney’s campaign, including the acute suspicion of centralized power, the value of self-responsibility, and a sense of the precarious nature of individual freedom.
