MDIV/Spiritual Direction Combined Program

Lancaster Theological Seminary & Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation

MDiv/Spiritual Direction Combined Program

Providing formation for contemplative living and leadership

The combined MDiv with Specialization in Spiritual Direction Program offers students the ability to earn the MDiv degree from Lancaster Theological Seminary and complete the certificate program in spiritual direction at Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation within three years. This innovative and collaborative program draws on the rich resources of Christian contemplative tradition to prepare individuals called to the ministry of spiritual direction.

There is a requirement of two years offering spiritual guidance with the support of a Shalem model of peer supervision. Shalem will not supply the peer supervision group, but can help with its formation based on the groups already in the area and/or graduates in the area. The spiritual guidance may be offered within a congregational setting and combined with other pastoral work if the student intends to pursue ordained ministry.

Students in this program will be required to complete the final spiritual direction intensive and project in the summer following their graduation. Applicants must apply to both programs and be accepted by both programs in order to be eligible. This program has a limit of 8 students per year. Because the intent of this program is to get graduates into pastoral positions more efficiently, it is intended for full-time students. If space is available and both institutions agree, part-time students may become eligible.

94 Credits Required for Graduation

Spiritual Direction Specialization Course of Study

**Persons interested must apply separately to both programs.**
