November 9, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Alumni from Lancaster and Moravian seminaries are invited to a Return & Learn on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023. Lancaster Professor of Hebrew Bible / Old Testament Dr. Julia M. O’Brien will present, “Were the Hebrew Prophets Social Activists?”

In progressive Christianity, the biblical prophets and their modern counterparts are widely understood in terms of social justice. Differently than conservative Christians, progressives define the “prophet” as a social critic and “prophetic preaching” as boldly speaking truth to power by calling out injustices in the present. Dr. O’Brien will explain why she finds an easy equation with the biblical prophets and social advocacy problematic.  She’ll share highlights of a book she’s completing on this topic, scheduled for publication in 2024 by Westminster John Knox Press.

This Return & Learn is available in person on the campus of Lancaster Seminary, Lark Room 206, and online via Zoom. The online link will be shared after registration. To register, select “alumni events” on the LTS alumni webpage.
