Professor Irion died Feb. 7, 2021, after a brief illness at the age of 98. He taught at Lancaster Seminary for 28 years before retiring in 1987. His legacy reaches far beyond our campus, our community, and our country. In addition to his work for social justice, he was an internationally known author on death, dying, and grief, and a champion of hospice and end-of-life ministry. He also was “a seminal thinker who contributed to the consolidation of pastoral theology when the young discipline was developing its own distinctive identity in seminary curricula,” noted Dr. Lee C. Barrett, Professor of Systematic Theology at Lancaster Theological Seminary.
