Lancaster Theological Seminary's Elizabeth Soto Albrecht, coordinator of Field Education, is the new Moderator of the Mennonite Church USA, the first Latina ever to serve in this two-year volunteer position. She will serve as Moderator until 2015. Elizabeth had been Moderator Elect since 2011, and completed a four-year term on the Executive Board of the Mennonite Church USA.
Since her appointment, Elizabeth and her team have traveled to Mennonite churches across the nation to meet new people, discover new areas, and listen to people's hopes and concerns.
Elizabeth explained that her intent is to “listen to stories on how God is at work in their life and in their Mennonite churches as they strive to be faithful in being a Peace Church. As I share my story too, together we will discern what God is calling us to BE today."
One of the main topics at the bi-annual assembly is immigration. Elizabeth hopes increase awareness for the new Immigration Reform law and walk in solidarity with the churches.
In 2015, she will finish her appointment in Kansas City, Missouri at the next scheduled Mennonite Church USA Assembly by presiding over the delegates sections. Her message will be one “of unity as we engage our diverse voices around the table of discussion.”
