“White Americans Need to Wake Up”

Lancaster Seminary Dean Dr. David Mellott, vice president for Academic Affairs, on the Charleston shootings: "White Americans need to wake up. Whatever we are doing or think we are doing to end racial discrimination in our country, we are failing.

Last night, a 21-year-old white male murdered 9 African Americans praying in their church in Charleston, SC. This young man did not arrive at that moment quickly or alone. His actions were the result of being shaped and taught by other white Americans. We white Americans are failing God, our children, our society, and our African American brothers and sisters if we do not dismantle the pedagogy of hatred, fear, supremacy at work in us, our communities, and our families.

We weep with the families who lost their loved ones and Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church members who lost their friends, pastor, and community members. But just importantly, we must commit ourselves today to stop educating ourselves and our children in the ways of hatred, fear, and supremacy."
